Grounded by a disturbingly powerful performance by Elle Fanning, The Girl from Plainville dramatizes a sordid true story with tasteful restraint.

Pedro S Such a good movie about mental health and manipulation Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Gareth v Despite Elle Fanning putting in a good performance, it was hard work getting drawn in to this show, and times it came across as a bit of a cheesy Hallmark production. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/23 Full Review Down R Presenting Carter sympathetically required such contortions of narrative that, by it's conclusion, the series had no resonance or interest. As such, the liberally applied split time device appeared to be intended to obscure and justify Carter's motivations rather than examine them, contributing little other than confusion to the plot. Well acted and, despite its flaws, this series had a mellow daytime television ambience that served well as background noise. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/31/23 Full Review PANDA M The audience score on this is buggin! This is not just a great true crime/mystery show it is just a great show! I couldn't stop watching it once I started. The case is a lot more complex then it may appear at first view Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Christian C This series left a lot to be desired in terms of writing and directorial choices - a lot of people pointed out the awful time-jumps and "disorienting" addition of delusions/dream sequences… this is a tired trope of trying to make the audience feel as the main character does.I'd also add that the dramatic writing on the phrasing of direct examination questions and DA Stormfront's phrasing involving the significant moments of their prosecution are subpar and, at times, very corny. But the real reason so many viewers dislike this series is because they've turned Michelle Carter into the girl who used to bully them in school. Which is pitiful, because if things had turned out differently and *she* had died, those same people would then be describing her as a victim or martyr for purposes of aligning themselves with that idea.Just look at the phrasing people use: "I don't care if eYEbRoWs was mentally ill!" That's a peculiar thing to say while trying to convince the world that you're VERY sympathetic and caring toward a mentally ill teenager who committed suicide. There are times where this series seems to really wrap itself in the idea of Carter "also being a victim" or being "misunderstood." While I wouldn't disagree with either of those notions, I'm hesitant to think that it's worth focusing the POV of the show on emphasizing. You can be aware of nuance and mitigation while also realizing that encouraging and taunting someone to "drink bleach" and to "get back into the car" while experiencing suicidal ideation may be closer to requesting someone perform a hit than they are to protected speech like hurling an insult at a stranger. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Yash B "The Girl from Plainville" is a pretty decent series based on a real case. The series starts off strong with intrigue but quickly starts to feel repetitive and dragged out. I think Elle Fanning does a great job in the main role but the show mostly just starts spinning its wheels and I feel like it could have been told in much fewer episodes or even as a movie. Overall, it doesn't always work as a miniseries, but it has good performances and tells the story in an acceptable way. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
